IMAGINARY INSTRUMENT

Gongcello is the result of the combination between a gong and a cello.

What about the project

The Imaginary Instrument project was the first big assignment of the product design course. Firstly we had to draw two different cards signed with a variety of musical instruments. The assignment was to combine the two instruments in the cards. In my case I had to merge a string instrument, like the cello, with a percussion instrument, that is the gong. The first step to create the imaginary instrument was doing a lot of sketches to define the final idea. Then we had to make a model using the 5mm thick brown cardboard and the packaging tape. The final work should be a true

scale model, as creative as possible. It should be also accurately modeled with many details. I had about two weeks to assemble the model of the instrument, that I called „Gongcello“. For the shape of the upper part I took inspiration from the electric cello, that can have little or no body at all because it relies on electronic amplification (rather than acoustic resonance). The Gongcello is equipped with two shoulder-shaped rods in order to integrate the instrument with the musician. My imaginary instrument can be played through a hammer that is combined with a bow.
